  • Apple October Event Recap

Less than two months after revealing the new iPhones and iOS 7, Apple held another event yesterday on October 22nd to reveal what else? More Apple products, such as the revamped Macbook Pros, Mac Pro, and new iPads. They also gave more details on the new Mac OS X, Mavericks. So many new details, where do I begin?? Well as par the course, Apple read its report in terms of sales, app downloads, etc.; and to be honest it is quite impressive. They’ve sold over 9 million iPhones by the end of the launch of the newest iPhone devices last month. With over 1 million apps available in the App Store, it currently touts a whopping 60 billion downloads! But enough with this on to the stuff you really want to know about...what's new! Apple released it's latest version of Mac OS X (version 10.9) Mavericks yesterday. The new OS has over 200 new features. Some notable ones, are workflows (Automator) can be saved as speakable items so that they can be ran via voice command. Another handy feature that will help improve battery life is App Nap, when you are not using an application or the window is minimized, App Nap slows down the app to conserve your battery. There is also better support for when you use multiple displays, giving each display connected to your desktop it's own menu bar and improved access to applications when using the multiple displays. You can check out the full list of new features here, Mac OS X new features I also appreciate how even though there are many new features, they still maintain the familiarity of the OS. Oh and did I mention it's FREE for all Mac users, even if you aren't running the previous release of Mac OS. It's available now from the App Store. They also reintroduced the new Macbook Pro, with retina display. Equipped with two Thunderbolt 2 ports, PCle-based flash storage, 4th Gen dual core or quad core processors, two USB 3 ports, it rivals it predecessor in terms of speed easily. The 13-inch MacBook Pro resolution boasts 2560x1600 pixels and the 15-inch model has 2800x1800 pixels, so saying the graphics are good is being quite modest. Hard drive capacity ranges from 128GB up to 512GB flash storage. in terms of portability, the new Macbook Pro weighs And of course it comes pre-configured with Mac OS X Mavericks. The base model for the 13-inch Macbook Pro is priced at $1299 and the base model 15-inch Macbook Pro is price at $1999. My personal favorite moment from the event was the in-depth reveal of the completely redesigned Mac Pro. It's no longer the standard tower but is an all black cylinder shape and at first it strikes you as odd, but ohhhh the specs on this thing!! Available in Quad core or 6 core (with Intel Xeon E5 processor), memory starting at 12GB and configurable with up to 64GB, and Dual AMD FirePro D300 or D500 graphics processors. Oh and did I mention that it can support up to six Thunderbolt displays or three 4K displays and has PCle-based flash storage starting at 256GB and can be configured up to 1TB. The all new Mac Pro Quad core pricing starts at $2,999, the 6-core starts at $3,999. The Mac Pro will be available in December. Annnndd drumroll.....there's a new iPad, meet the iPad Air! It's thinner, approximately 7.5 millimeters thick and weighing just 1lb. It is also engineered with an A7 chip that is designed with 64-bit architecture. It comes pre-loaded with iOS 7 and the iWork apps (Numbers, Pages, Keynote) as well as GarageBand and iPhoto. Pricing for the iPad Air starts are $499. So will you be purchasing any new Apple products? www.apple.com

  • Nintendo launches 2DS!

(Photo credit: Nintendo) Nintendo not only dropped the price on the Wii U today, but also launched a cheaper DS model, the Nintendo 2DS. The device is priced at $129.99, and most notably doesn't close like the other DS models. It does however have the SD card slot, touchscreen (it comes with a stylus as well). The most notable feature other than it being cheaper is it will play all 3DS games in 2D and it also plays games that are made for the original DS as well. It comes in blue and red and will be available on October 12th.

  • Samsung introduces the new Galaxy S5

(Photo Credit: CNET.com) Yesterday at the MWC, Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, Samsung unvelied the new Galaxy S5. There isn't a wow factor when it comes to the actual design of the phone, but it has a few new bells and whistles. There's a heart rate monitor and they've incorporated fingerprint scanning into this model. There are some slight interface differences in terms of the menu as it is running Android's latest mobile OS, KitKat. Probably one of the most noted features is that the S5 is designed against the military spec IP67, it's waterproof (it can be in water up to 30 minutes at about 3 feet deep) and it's dust-proof. Other wise the specs are quite similar to the S4 but not in a bad way, those that were are expecting a huge change..well welcome to how most of us Apple iPhone users feel. The device is set to go on sale April 11th and will be available through T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon, MetroPCS and U.S. Cellular. No pricing information is available but I expect it to follow their usual pricing structure, but will update you when I know more. It's a solid showing from Samsung, but not what most users were expecting. ~ChicDivaGeek

  • Critical iOS update and why you should install it

Screenshot courtesy of ChicDivaGeek Apple released a critical update over the weekend for iPhone and iPad, iOS 7.0.6. It addresses a SSL vulnerability that would allow an attacker "with privileged network position" to capture and modify data protected by SSL. Basically the flaw makes your secure connections vulnerable to attack. So if you get the time, please install this update. Of course as with most updates, this requires most of us to clear out some space on our iOS devices prior to installing it.

  • Adobe Voice for iPad

There's a new Adobe app for iPad users, and it's called Adobe Voice. This app in essence is a story telling app, it allows for you to create videos/tutorials without having a full production crew, right from your iPad! First off Adobe is known for making some pretty cool software so I was excited to try it off of their brand reputation alone, but let's not forget to mention it's FREE! So you can download it from the AppStore and tinker to your heart's content. The app loads fairly quickly and it has a tutorial, which is really quite good. It made a lot of sense, and helped me through my first video, which I am sharing with you guys in this post. You can add icons, pictures, change the themes (i.e colors) and even music. I think this app is really nifty for those small business owners, sole proprietors out there or people who like to post videos on the go, or just don't have the full scale budget or advanced know-how to do these kinds of things. So here's my first attempt at Adobe Voice, I liked it. Hope you get a chance to try it out, and it's free so why not? Well here's the link to it (embed code isn't acting right) Testing Adobe Voice by ChicDivaGeek Let me know what you think! ~ChicDivaGeek

  • Twitter integrated shopping.....meet Amazon Cart

So it seems the wave of companies to incorporate social media into their businesses, well Amazon has taken it a step further and introduced #AmazonCart. The idea is simple, you (the twitter user) see a tweet reply with the hashtag #AmazonCart and the item is then added to your shopping cart. In order for the hashtag to work, you need to sync your Amazon account with your twitter account. So do you think this is a good thing, or does it just encourage laziness? I would think that if your intent is to shop then you would be on Amazon? Will you be using this? ~ChicDivaGeek

  • Latest update to Xbox One..A Black Screen

Photo: XBox/Microsoft Microsoft has long been the tech company associated with BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) when your computer fatally errors out or runs into a software/hardware issue. So perhaps they got bored, as the latest Xbox One update has been reportedly causing console owners to experience a black screen following the update. The update was released on Friday, Microsoft is aware of it and some users have powered down the console by holding down the power button or just unplugging it (sound familiar?) You can post your concerns on this thread if you've recently done the update as you are not alone in this This geek, still has her Xbox 360..thinking I may hold onto it a little longer ~ChicDivaGeek

  • Google Chromecast: What it is, and is it for you?

At first glance this looks like a USB flash drive, but it's not it's the Chromecast device from Google. The device plugs into the HDMI port on your HDTV and you can stream apps to your television. This is perfect for those of us who haven't made the transition to Smart TVs. You can stream Netflix, Hulu Plus, HBO Go, and YouTube right to your TV (wireless internet is required) But how cool is that?? This sounds like a good investment if you are already a Netflix or other online streaming service subscriber and want to cut some of the cable costs. The device costs a mere $35 and you control it from your iOS or Android device or via the Cast extension in the Google Chrome browser on your laptop. Just be connected to the same WiFi network and your set. You can purchase it here Chromecast or find locate a local retailer. ~ChicDivaGeek

  • Mink: 3D Printer for Makeup

photo credit: GraceMink.com So by now everyone has heard of 3D printers but this one has a little more glam to it. Meet Mink, the 3D makeup printer! The desktop printer that prints makeup. Mink is the brainchild of Grace Choi. The printer, is a miniature 3D printer that can print anything from powders to lipsticks. You can seemingly make any makeup color you wish. The printer is configured to work with image software already on your PC/Mac and you can either type hex code in for the color, or screenshot the color and send the print job to the printer, and ta-da you've got makeup! Thinking about how much it costs to purchase good makeup i.e MAC, Sephora, or shopping in high end stores for products. This could be a good investment. It is said that it will retail for less than $200. This could seemingly be a really good thing for those interested in being makeup artists or the girly girl with some money to spend and likes makeup. Will you be investing in this? I'll keep you posted on this as more information is released ~ChicDivaGeek
