  • From the A List to Silicon Valley...Your favorite celebs you didn't know were technology investors

Celebrity by definition is a famous person or being well known. But something that I bet you didn't know is that some of your favorite celebrities are investors in technology startups...alot of them! Beyoncé Beyoncé Yes the queen of the BeyHive silently invests into tech! Now of course she is a brand all in her own right, landing number 34 on Forbes Celebrity 100 list this year. But most recently Beyoncé invested $150,000 into SideStep, via her management company Parkwood Entertainment. SideStep is an app that will let you buy concert merchandise ahead of the concert and pick up when you get there. Robert Downey Jr. Robert Downey Jr (Photo: Wikipedia) Bet you didn't know he had other things in common with his on screen character Tony Stark aka Iron Man did you? Through Downey Ventures, a division of his company, Team Downey, Robert Downey Jr. invests in digital media start-ups and also incubates consumer entertainment technology companies. As recently as this year, they've invested in the Geek subscription site, Loot Crate and the online learning platform MasterClass. Nas Nas (Photo: NasirJones.com) *Cues up If I ruled the World* Rapper Nas, doesn't just dabble, he has Silicon Valley venture capitalist Ben Horowitz advising him! Smart moves there Mr Nasir. The two are both investors in the lyric annotation site Rap Genius, now known as Genius. Between his company QueensBridge Venture Partner and his own personal investments, he has 41 investments, that include, Tilt, SeatGeek, Coinbase and a host of others. Magic Johnson Magic Johnson (Photo: MagicJohnson.com) This one is an obvious one but since we share the same birthday, he's going on this list lol! (I didn't know that until I went and did my research) This guy literally has his hands in everything! From Movie Theaters to Starbucks (which he sold) to 30 Burger Kings. Did you know he's on the board of Directors for Square?? His company Magic Johnson Enterprises as recently as September invested in Uncharted Play a company that looks to use technology to empower the people. Ashton Kutcher Ashton Kutcher (Photo: IMDB) He's definitely not the guy he played on That 70's Show....not even close. Ashton Kutcher's portfolio of tech investments reads like a seasoned business man. He's got over 50 invesments, some noteable ones include AirBnB, Duolingo, SeatGeek, and Change.org. If you take nothing else from this, it should be that you don't have to be an IT person to invest in technology and you should also be making your money work for you! ~ChicDivaGeek

  • Poke, Chat, Like...and now you can sell! Facebook rolls out MarketPlace feature

Facebook Marketplace (Photo: Facebook Newsroom) You may or may not have noticed the new icon at the bottom of your Facebook app that looks like a little storefront. Well it's exactly what it looks like, Facebook announced the new feature yesterday. It will allow you to buy and sell items with your community. This actually kind of makes sense, at least you have some type of connection with the people instead of randomly scrolling through Craigslist. *You could previously sell things in groups so this is a more formal expansion of that* If you've got items that you don't want to keep anymore, just upload them to MarketPlace and sell them. You're already spending time on Facebook anyway right? You do have to post the price, description and your location when adding items to sell. Facebook however doesn't handle the payments that is between you and the buyer. But with things like PayPal and Square Cash I don't think that's a huge issue. But Facebook does have that feature that allows you send money too, soooo. ~ChicDivaGeek

  • How did you do that?? Tips and Tricks You may or may not know about in iOS 10

iOS came out a couple of weeks ago, so by now you should be familiar with quite a few of the new features. Pretty sure people are tired of me and the screen effects in Messages but I love them! If you haven't really looked around, because trust me some of these features don't have the flashing sign over them. So I thought I'd share some of the things I found as well as few tips on how to fix a few things you may not like in iOS 10. Just a touch...wait... If you have tried to rest your finger on the home button to unlock your phone, you may have noticed that the you have to press to unlock in iOS10. Well if you miss being able to just lay your finger there, or just want some things to stay the same then, here is how you fix that. Go to Settings-->General-->Accessibility-->Home Button, and turn on the "Rest Finger to Open" setting. Make Siri a little worldly You can give Siri an Australian or British accent. Not a major thing but fun to switch it around. Siri is currently set to British in my iPhone. Siri can tell you who is calling When you get an incoming call, Siri can announce who it is. So in case you're not in the room, and before you run sprints to catch it, you can enable the Announce Calls feature. You can do this by going to Settings-->Phone-->Announce Calls. Leave a message.... Even with the aid of Visual Voicemail there are some who still don't want to press play on the message. Well if you've gotten a new voicemail since you upgraded (or if you haven't updated yet) Apple has Transcription Beta so you can read your voicemail now too. Now keep in mind it is still in beta so it's not 100 percent yet but it's pretty close. So instead of you having to press play, you'll know what the gist of the message is about already. Remove Apps you don't use Don't have an Apple Watch? Don't watch the NASDAQ? Well you can finally remove the Stocks, Apple Watch, even the Podcasts app if you're not using it! Again not a huge thing, but it's nice to have the option. For my Safari multi-tabbers I am famous for opening, and leaving open, roughly 10 tabs at a time in Safari *Don't judge me, I come back to them...eventually* So now if you press and hold that little button at the bottom that looks like two windows in Safari, it will bring up the option to close all the tabs at once. Follow the email trail I know this may have seemed helpful but if you use the Mail app on your iPhone which I am sure most of you do, you'll notice that the it collapses all the emails in a trail together. Makes sense to a certain extent, but visually it's a little hard to follow. So I want my email back to the way it was, where I could follow the conversation..even if it went on for 20 emails. To change this go to Settings-->Mail-->turn off the "organize by Thread" option. Lullaby and goodnight... No it won't sing you to sleep with the latest iOS update but there is a new feature called Bedtime. It's meant to help you get a good night's rest. You can access in the Clock app. You tell it what time you want to wake up, how many hours of rest you want to get, and the days you want the alarm to go off and it will send you reminder that it's time to go to bed. How many of us can honestly say we get a full eight hours every night? Oh, and if you want the more traditional feel of a stopwatch, select the stopwatch, and then swipe left and it will give you this screen.... So far this update has been one of my favorites so far, so tell me what are your favorite features in iOS 10? ~ChicDivaGeek

  • Are you using Google Drive? If not 5 reasons why you should be

If you've got a GMail account, you've got Google Drive..it comes with it, but alot of you may not be using it. Well I'm going to give you at least 5 reasons you should be. 1. Online Storage You can upload and save documents to your Google Drive so that you can access them from just about anywhere. Not to mention, it's a great way to make sure you have a backup of really important files. 2. Google Docs Not only can you open attachment's other's send you that have Microsoft Office extensions, with the FREE Google Docs you can create new files right from inside your drive. Within Google Docs, there is Docs which is like Microsoft Word; Sheets which is like Excel; Slides (there's a pattern here lol) is like PowerPoint. The one up, you can even make forms for people to submit information through on Google Docs. Let's say you're gathering survey information or just need certain specifics from people that are coming to an event, this is a really easy way to do it. You can even make it to where the information gets put right into a spreadsheet. 3. Collaborative Editing Want to get a few people involved in a project or perhaps you're starting a small business and you don't have a network server or anything like that. You can share documents and things in your Google Drive with other people, allow them to edit and you all can see your edits in real time. 4. Connect other apps You have the ability to connect other apps to your Google Drive, everything from PDF converters to Game emulators. This can be done from the top where it says My Drive and then scrolling down to the bottom and choosing more, then selecting "Connect More Apps". 5. It's 15GB of free storage! That's the magic word here, it's free, so no annual or monthly payments. FREE! So why wouldn't you take advantage of it? ( I know this last one was kind of cheating but...) So go ahead and make use of it. *makes note to connect Game Emulator to play old SNES games* ~ChicDivaGeek

  • Ctrl+Shift+Blend! Checking out the USB charging Bingo Juicer Cup [Review]

I love when a new gadget falls in my lap! And by that I mean I was given this product in exchange for my review, thoughts and opinions are my own. Now that we've got that out of the way, I am sure you've seen this shared on Facebook a few times or even stumbled across it on the web. It's the Bingo Self Blending Juicer Cup. Pretty neat right? When I first got it, I honestly expected it to be lighter for some strange reason, it only weighs 1.3lbs. It is a fair weight but not heavy enough that you wouldn't carry it around, hence the loop. It recharges via USB so I can be charging my blender cup while I am say ohhhh typing this post! But moving along. The cup itself is made of a thick glass with a 2600mAh lithium battery. You can take the base off when cleaning it. This is made in Hong Kong so the directions are in Chinese, but it contained pictures so that was helpful, and they are pretty self explanatory. Now it did come charged so I didn't have to charge it before I used it. You will need to lay it down to charge it since the port is on the bottom and it can't stand straight up while charging. All setup and ready to juice, multitaskers unite! USB charging port on bottom of Bingo Juicer Cup You can't make smoothies for the entire fitness group with this but a single serve one you definitely can. Also do not use frozen fruit in here, so fresh fruit is best. I attempted that and it did a little but that was after some thawing on the fruit side. Add a little milk or yogurt, turn the cup upside down (make sure the top is on tight), press the inverted power button twice and voila! It starts to make your smoothie juice right there. I know more than a few on the go healthy people this might be really convenient for. My smoothie results (not bad for the first try) It comes in 5 different colors, Peach Pink, Violet Purple, Mint Blue, Matcha Green, and Watermelon Red..even the color options sound healthy! You can order yours from Apollo Box for $39.98. So are you going to order the Bingo Juicer Cup? I'm hoping this will encourage me to do it a little more...I might even keep it my desk at work.....hmmmm. Apollo Box has tons of other gadgets too if this isn't your cup of...I won't I won't lol. Multitasking about to blend and blog! (Photo: My Fiance) ~ChicDivaGeek

  • Apple Event Recap

What a day! There have been rumblings and rumors for weeks, but today Apple held their keynote presentation and it didn't disappoint. So let me catch you up on the highlights from today's presentation, because you know that I was watching it live and doing all kinds of nerdy note taking! iPhone 7 iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus (Photo: Apple) Unlike Apple's order of events today, I'm going to start with why you're here lol....the iPhone 7. We all knew it was coming but let's really get into how awesome this new iPhone is. First off it's waterproof and dustproof. Not so much wowed by the dust repelling capability but waterproof??? That's a big one! There's some nice design modifications too; The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will bring back the black finish, which is a glossy black, it will be available in a Jet Black finish (which is kind of a matte black), Rose Gold, Gold, and Silver as well. Apple also improved the camera, with optical image stabilization on the 12 megapixel camera as well as a 7 megapixel front (Facetime) camera..you can have the best selfies ever or it'll bring out every pore on your face. But Apple went a step further and put TWO cameras iPhone 7 Plus! It has the same wide angle camera that is on the iPhone 7 but also has a 12 megapixel telephoto camera that has greater zoom capabilities. Essentially Apple is putting a very tiny DSLR camera in the palm of your hand. Can you imagine the amazing photos that you can take with your phone? As a blogger, getting high quality photos is big, but for me remembering to carry my fancy camera everywhere is a job. The rumors are true...Apple did away with the headphone jack on the iPhone 7...but before you melt into mass hysteria, you will be able to connect your headphones via the lighting connector (There is a pair of lightning connector ear phones included). Now of course if you have a great pair of headphones now, or a set of earbuds that are completely mangled or lost, you will be able to connect them via the included 3.5mm to lightning connector that will be included with the iPhone 7. Say goodbye to charging and listening to music or taking a call at the same time on your earbuds, I do this often so I am sad. On the heels of this reveal it was the perfect segway into revealing their new Airpods, Apple's wireless earbuds. *pull up the lost and found bucket* I can barely keep up with the regular earbuds, or keep them in my ear so I honestly don't see how this is going to work. Apple sees wireless as the future which while innovative doesn't seem functional to me when I'm in the middle of a gym workout..but what do I know? The Airpods can detect when they are in your ear, and pause when they aren't..but can they not fall out of my ear or beep so I can find them? laughing but serious lol. Did I mention that the AirPods are $159?? AirPods (Photo: Apple)The iPhone 7 pricing will start at $649 and the iPhone 7 Plus will start at $769. You can pre-order starting September 9th. They will come in 32GB, 128GB, and 256GB capacity. Jet Black finish is only available in 128GB and 256GB. 16GB has been done away with, but honestly how much could you really store on it after you install some apps, a couple dozen photos and sync your music? iOS 10 iOS 10 (Photo: Apple.com) Apple kind of breezed through this with a few bullet points, saying there are tons of new features and it's the biggest iOS update yet. This is probably because they previewed it back in June at the WWDC. There have been improvements for Messages, your messages have more functionality, with the ability to write in iMessage, your message bubbles can even look different if you are trying to express excitement, so they shake a little if you're it's supposed to be perceived as loud. Third party integration for Siri, so she can really be more of the personal assistant you want her to be..now if they can get her to sound like Jarvis from Iron Man that would be cool! iOS 10 will be available for download September 13th. Apple Watch 2 Apple announced the 2 series of the wildly popular Apple Watch, the Apple Watch 2. Like the new iPhone it will be waterproof...so it can be submerged up to 50 meters and still work fine. It will also come in a new ceramic finish (I think of fragile and shatter when I hear ceramic). It will use GPS and Wi-Fi to help the wearer track their location and of course this helps improve the incorporation into your workout. Apple also announced that Pokemon Go will be available on the Apple Watch..but you will still need your phone to catch them. But if you're out getting active hey, more power to you! watchOS 3 has improvements to make getting to your apps easier, as well a new Breathe app. This is to encourage the wearer to take a minute and a deep breathe, so a little stress reliever in your day. Apple Watch series 2 (Photo: Apple) Apple also announced there will be a Nike edition of the Apple Watch, which to me this makes perfect sense. If you're touting fitness, then the Apple Watch and Nike being partners is a perfect match. The Nike Edition will feature a Nike Sport Band, that is breathable and flexible, and since you have the Nike Edition you will automatically be apart of the Nike Run Club. It will even send encouraging reminders to ask you "Are we running today?" Uhmmm, I need this functionality to motivate me to go to the gym period. Now while the Apple Watch series 2, as well as the Nike Edition will start at $369. The Ceramic Apple Watch starts at $1249. You can begin pre-ordering September 9. Oh and lastly but most certainly not least..Nintendo announced that Super Mario will be coming to the App Store! It will be in a game called Super Mario Run! You can sign up to be notified in the App Store when it's available. I've already hit the button...who doesn't like Mario? ~ChicDivaGeek

  • Quick Tips to free up space on your iPhone or Android

If you're anything like me, your phone holds tons of pictures, is your pocket DJ for trips to the gym, and holds a ton of pictures...because c'mon who prints pictures out to capture memories anymore? Well with the upcoming release of iOS 10 and the recent release of Android Nougat, (Keep in mind each iteration of Android OS has to be modified through the carriers before it's made available to you) you're going to need to clear up some space to download the latest operating system for your device. So here are some quick tips to clear some space without completely purging all your digital data. For my Android users..... If you have an Android device this is one feature that I love! You can add an micro SD card, which come in varying sizes, to expand your storage on your phone. That way you can store app data, if the app allows it, as well as your photos, music, and videos. Another handy feature is the built-in storage feature (this can be found under settings) that will let you see exactly what is taking up space on your device. You can easily clear cached data (which is usually for offline use for apps or for quicker access) from this area as well. For my iPhone users.... We all know that what you purchase in terms of iPhone storage size is what you get. But you also go into settings and manage/view what is using up the space on your iPhone from the Storage area in Settings. While there is no way to clear cached data by itself, I've found that you can delete the app and re-download it to free up space and get rid of the cached data (Facebook and Instagram cache alot of data). You of course can store your photos and things in iCloud, your phone comes with 5GB free, and anything more you would need to pay for. Right out the gate a 32GB is the best choice, 16GB sounds like alot but once you download apps, store some pictures and music, it's really not. For those of you that don't mind paying for a streaming service (and have a ton of data to use) Apple Music or Spotify are good alternatives to storing music directly on your device (I'm still doing this, and periodically have to go through and delete some songs because..well I don't like them as much as I thought lol). Hope these tips helped and see you tomorrow for the Apple Event recap! ~ChicDivaGeek

  • Saving is Chic: Download these apps to help you save some money

I don't know a single person who doesn't like to save money, so why not use your smartphone to do it? I've got a couple of apps on my phone that allow you to get cashback for doing what you're already going to do..shop. I'm not talking about for things you would have to go out of your way to buy, but your normal everyday budget items...like groceries and gas. Ibotta This little app let's you redeem your regular shopping trips for cash back. So those trips to the grocery store, Walmart, etc. You can earn money back from them! It takes a few steps but it's pretty easy. You unlock rebates inside the app prior to going shopping then, scan the barcodes on the product, then scan your receipts! For some of their stores you can even link your loyalty card, so like Food Lion, Giant. It is available on iOS and Android. Ibotta Screen (Photo: iTunes) Ibotta Screen (Photo: iTunes) Upside If you have a car, then you are clearly familiar with the pain at the pump. Well with Upside you can get cash back for filling up your gas tank. No seriously! Upside literally gives you cash back for something you're going to do anyway (sensing a theme with this post?). It's really easy, you simply open the app, it searches the area you're in for participating gas stations and you can pick which offer to claim. Did I mention that it offers cash back incentives for items purchased in the store too? So you can fill up your tank grab a lemonade and some chips and earn some coins in the process. I always open the app and I pick the gas station with the highest cash back. You have to upload a picture of your itemized (so you need to go inside after you've filled up) receipt when you are done. It also doesn't work with cash transactions. Upside Screen (Photo: iTunes) Upside Screen (Photo: iTunes) You can choose to have your cashback mailed to you (why not entirely sure) or you can connect your PayPal account and have it transferred there. The good...it's a DC area startup! The bad it's only servicing the DC area now, but I really hope this takes off and will be in other areas so everyone can save! It is available on iOS and Android. Happy Savings! ~ChicDivaGeek

  • Chic Reviews: Rebecca Minkoff iPhone 6/6s Wallet Wristlet

It's a wallet..it's a phone case...wait it's both! Cute and compact the Rebecca Minkoff Wristlet Wallet is great when you can't carry a full purse and need to hang on to the essentials. It's cute and functional, and needless to say it's secure...so much so that when I first put my phone in it, I couldn't get it out! After my small meltdown and lots of pulling I figured out how to remove it. But needless to say while it was in there, it falling out while it was on my wrist was the least of my worries. It didn't prevent me from using my phone either, I could charge my phone, plug in my headphones, and get to all of the buttons and the camera was still usable as well. It was a little awkward putting the phone to my ear though. But I was able to put my phone, my ID, bank card, and a few bills and just go! Only thing that would make this better is if the strap was adjustable to secure it to your wrist, you know like the Wii controller? Otherwise it comes in quite handy! Rebecca Minkoff also offers this Wristlet Wallet with a charging option as well. The way my iPhone battery is setup, I think I need to invest in that one. *I was given this product for free, thoughts and opinions are my own*

  • Gamer Post: Nintendo's Wii U

copyright Nintendo Are you a Gamer, do you have kids, or just thoroughly enjoy a way to have fun, well this post may be for you. Nintendo's newest game console, the Wii U, will be available this holiday season. Now I am sure the first thought is what makes this any different from the Wii? Well if you've looked at my picture, then there is an immediate difference, there is a component that looks like a handheld game device beside the console. But there are many other features that make this a very attractive console to buy this year: The console itself has been slimmed down to allow it to blend in with more with the home as well as making it easier to find a space for it. The Wii U has internal flash memory, in addition to SD cards and external USB drives Like it's predecessor, it will also have Wireless connectivity Backwards compatibility, meaning you will be able to play all your original Wii games on the new Wii U system (This is huge to me, nothing worse than having to get rid of your games or let them collect dust when buying a new system) Those are some of the techs, but what about that new controller? That is known as the GamePad. Not only does it function as a controller, but it has a 6.2 inch LCD touch screen. It also has motion control capabilities, a front facing camera, microphone, stereo speakers, and rumble features. It also serves as an infrared remote. There are at least 20 game titles slated to be released for the new console, such as Batman Arkham City, Assassin's Creed III, and what would a Nintendo system be without a new Super Mario Bros. So will the Wii U be on your 2012 holiday shopping list? Head over to Nintendo and check out more details and other game titles. Nintendo Wii U E3 presentation

  • Windows 8

Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 8 will officially launch on October 26, 2012. This is the next chapter following the successful Windows 7 OS. Initially thought to only be a tablet operating system, it is being pushed for both Desktop computers and tablets, have you seen the new operating system yet? Microsoft.com has Windows 8 release preview so you can test it out before it's released and see if it's worth you upgrading to. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/release-preview Granted you do have to do a clean install and please keep in mind that this is a pre-release so all of the bugs have not been worked out and all hardware and software may not work yet, as drivers are being developed. Another neat fact, Microsoft is offering a $40 upgrade option to owners of licenesed copies of Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7 through January 31, 2013. This offer is also extended to those who have installed the Windows 8 release preview.
