  • Review: My Week with the Mazda 6

Me loving the moonroof on the Mazda 6 I am constantly on the go and last week was no different, well except I got to make all of my weekly routines in the 2016 Mazda 6!! When I first laid eyes on it I was like, "That's a Mazda??" I've seen the old Mazda 6's, 626's and I remember loving the Millenia (never ended up with one though). Mazda has really revamped their vehicles not only on the outside but the inside as well. I got to drive a Sonic Silver Metallic 2016 I Grand Touring edition of the Mazda 6, well you can obviously see it's silver but I wonder who names the shades for the car makers....but anyway let's get into the features! First off, can we talk about how gorgeous this car is? The body styling is great, it had full leather interior, now everyone doesn't like leather especially with the cold weather months, but it has seat warmers! Those definitely came in handy. The ride is extremely smooth and the speed acceleration with it's 4-cylinder Skyactiv engine is really good. The gas mileage was great too even with the speed! Now of course I was fascinated by all the technology packed inside, or as my son put it, "Mom look at all these buttons!!" As soon as you turn on the car, (did I mention that it's push-button start?) there touch screen panel in middle light's up and gives you access to navigation, Sirius XM, and other important settings in the car. Then right in your line of sight behind the steering wheel is a small screen that displays your speed (you really can't say you didn't know how fast you were going). In the middle console between the driver and passenger seats are controls so you don't have to fumble and reach for the touch screen while driving. Convenient and safe. In that same place is parking break...no that's not a typo, there is a small button to activate your parking brake! Touch screen panel Center Console Some of the safety features include the blind spot monitoring system, which will beep and also flash an indicator on your side mirrors when other vehicles are detected beside you. Also notable is the Lane departure warning system, it let's you know when you are drifting into another lane, it sounds like when you hit the rumble strips on the shoulder on the highway. It even has rain sensing windshield wipers. How cool is that, even though driving in the rain without them is silly. And although this may sound silly, my absolute favorite feature on this vehicle (besides the XM radio and push-button start) was the power moonroof! I loved being able to enjoy the air without it being in my face and drowning my music. Honestly, if I didn't already have a vehicle I would look at Mazda 6, I'm a Nissan Gal. But for the model I drove the MSRP is just a little over $33,000 which isn't that bad. Mazda has really stepped their game up! They are also promoting the Mazda Drive 4 Good campaign and gave me a $25 gift card to use to donate to the charitable organization of my choice! I chose Safe Shores DC's Children's Advocacy Center. *Disclosure: Product or service was provided for free or at reduced cost in exchange for my review, opinions are my own* ~ChicDivaGeek

  • Gift Ideas for the Techie or Geek in Your Life

Photo: Shutterstock You hear that? *cues up Christmas music* Well if you have that one station that I know every area has, that plays Christmas music all day every day starting well before Thanskgiving, then you hear it. If you been into stores lately then you see the onslaught of Christmas decorations already front and center. So now comes the part of figuring out what to get everyone on your list, kids are usually pretty good about telling you or making a list of what they want. But what do you get for the geek in your life? I've got a few suggestions...... Tablet- If they don't already have one and they are into gadgets, it's a great gift and they'll get alot of use out of it. Now I know you're thinking if they have a computer or a smartphone, why do they need a tablet? Well it's more portable and I know for me when traveling much easier to just take a tablet to read my books, play a few games on. Oh and Amazon's Kindle Fire tablet is retailing for $49.99 now so you don't have to break the bank! Kindle Fire Photo: Amazon.com Media Streaming Device - Got a Netflix, Hulu, Pandora or any other movie/music subscription? Well we all know with Smart TVs allow for you to connect these accounts to the TV so you can access your favorite media but what if you don't have a Smart TV? I don't so last year I got received a Chromecast as a gift. It's only $35 and I can stream Netflix to my TV, as well as other media right from my phone or iPad! They are always adding apps to expand the capabilities of this handy little device. There is also the Amazon Fire Stick which also allows for streaming of Amazon Video, Hulu, Netflix, HBONow and more! It retails for $39.99. There is also the Roku, which precedes the other two devices and has been through a few incarnations and also has a few incarnations such as the original Roku 1 Player (which can connect to an older TV through the AV connection or HDMI). Like the other two it also has the Roku stick that works with the HDMI port on newer TVs. The Roku products start at $49.99. Streaming devices (l-r: Chromecast, FireStick, Roku Stick, Roku 1) Gift Cards- I know this one wasn't really a secret or something hard to figure out. When in doubt a gift card will always make a great gift. But if it's for a techie, try an iTunes, Amazon, or a Visa/MasterCard so that they can use to indulge in whatever gadgets they please! Almost forgot, if you're still not sure, check out www.thinkgeek.com for gift ideas as well! Hope this short list was a little helpful for you and I'll be adding and sharing more of my gift insights soon! ~ChicDivaGeek

  • Review: Entertainment, Comfort, and Sport Driving the 2016 Kia Optima LX Turbo

2016 Kia Optima LX in Platinum Graphite You're familiar with Kia right? You've seen the commercials with the dancing hamsters, and they even have NBA baller Blake Griffin in their commercials. Now that I think about it, he's in the commercial for the Kia Optima. I had a chance to test the 2016 Kia Optima LX Turbo recently and l have a completely new outlook on the Kia brand! It's always a switch up for me since I drive a compact SUV very used to sitting up but I felt comfortable from the moment I got into this car. I opened the door and I heard music...no seriously, the car plays welcome music when you sit down in it (it also plays it when you turn the engine off). The push button ignition made it quick and easy to get going, oh and did I mention that the power front seats both automatically adjust, so once I set it, each time I got in the car it would adjust to my perfectly tuned setting and when you turn the car off, it moves back to the original position. Now that I had gotten into the car and actually started it up, the 8" touch screen display takes center stage. I can easily access the settings, built-in navigational system, and the most important part of a pleasant ride, the music. The Kia Optima LX Turbo comes with FM/AM radio, CD player, Sirius XM satellite radio, as well as auxiliary connection to play MP3 or connect your phone. You can connect your phone via Bluetooth as well. The Kia Optima LX also has wifi-connectivity, that is the ability to connect to wifi networks. This was a pleasant surprise. Another convenience feature that I liked was that there were not only one but TWO power connections up front right beside the auxiliary connection and the USB port. With the weather jumping around the way it has been up here, the dual climate control helped out as well. The 1.6L Turbo engine, to be a 4-cylinder provided quick acceleration and a smooth ride through the nightmare traffic in the DC area. But with all that power there are tons of safety features, dual front advanced airbags, knee airbags, full curtain side airbags, even a driver's knee airbag. There's also a rearview backup camera as well as rear parking assist and rear cross traffic alert system. The cross traffic alert system even tells you the direction the traffic (vehicle or person) is coming from. Now probably one of the coolest features about the Kia Optima LX is the UVO, Infotainment and Connectivity System. This system which pairs with an app allows you to set up curfew limits, GeoFence zones ( more or less a perimeter that the car is to stay within), and speed alerts. Now all of these are great if you have a teenage driver or you are letting someone else use your vehicle. You receive alerts when any of these are triggered. There's even automatic diagnostics on this thing! I don't know my way around a car the way I do a computer so this feature is pretty cool. Oh handy smart trunk feature, the trunk automatically opens when you stand at the back...that feature came in handy on grocery day. With all the features and technology inside this car you would think it costs a ton..not true the 2016 Kia Optima LX Turbo, retails for $27,415. *Disclosure, I was lent the vehicle for review purposes, but all opinions are my own*

  • Review: Cruising Around in the 2016 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring

2016 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring AWD The holidays are rolling right on by us but over the Thanksgiving break I had a great time driving around, running errands and touting leftovers in the 2016 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring AWD! First thing out the gate look at the color, doesn't it just scream fall? The color is Titanium Flash Mica (still not sure who comes up with the color names but it's unique). I immediately loved the fact that it was a compact SUV, I've got a kid that's almost my height and with it being the week of Thanksgiving I needed all the room I could get! But that was just the beginning of the cool features, we've got to get inside it to really appreciate it... Now the Grand Touring is the top of the line model for the Mazda CX-5, so it has ALL the bells and whistles. As soon as I got in the Parchment color leather seats immediately caught me off guard, in a good way. Fancy right? Not my go to color with a child but they were so comfortable and with nice leather sport seats comes...heated front seats, so that helped when getting in the car early in the morning since leather takes on the temperature of the car and it was cold some mornings. The driver seat was also had power controls so I could adjust the seat exactly to my liking and my height, I'm only 5'3" so I can't be but so far away from the wheel. Parchment interior of the 2016 Mazda CX-5 (Driver's seat view) Parchment interior of the 2016 Mazda CX-5 All power locks and a power parking break, oh and of course with steering wheel and Bluetooth controls for added convenience and safety! It even has a power moon-roof, which funny enough I got to use because it was unseasonably warm a few days. The center console drew me in like most computer screens do and that is where I have the most fun right after driving (I'm a geek can't help it). There is built in navigation (which you can only program while stopped, safety first), Sirius Satellite radio, all controlled from the touch screen display readily at your fingertips, but right where your hand normally rests, there are radio/audio controls there too! The Bose speakers in here make whatever music you chose to listen to sound great! Center Console, audio controls and electronic parking brake Touchscreen display The push button ignition is always a feature I like, no fumbling to put a key in the ignition, car starts as long as the key is inside (however that can lead to you losing sight of the keys lol). This beauty also had dual-zone climate control so I didn't have to make my passenger sweat if I was feeling a little chilly. The Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring also comes with rear-view camera as well as blind spot monitoring which is definitely handy in DC area traffic. Also as with most new Mazda models, the SKYACTIV engine helps with gas mileage (this guy gets 26MPG combined city/highway) as well as your overall drive. This model is priced at $32,340. I enjoyed my week riding around, my only real complaint which is probably a preference is the Parchment seats (white) I would not choose that interior color with a kid or with all the moving around I do. *Disclosure: The car was lent to me in exchange for my review, opinions are my own* ~ChicDivaGeek

  • Step Up Your Nail Glam with Preemadonna: Instantly printing nail art from your phone!

Preemadonna NailBot (Photo: Preemadonna) If you're like me and most girls I know, then you have tons of polish but how often do you want that little something extra? I mean they sell those little instant press on designs at the beauty stores, or you can get polish with flecks of glitter or one that changes color (mood polish). But how about instead of going to the nail shop you let your smartphone do your nails? *I mean it's 2015 why not?* The Nailbot by Preemadonna will allow you to do just that! The Nailbot prints pictures, images, emojis or art you've designed yourself right onto your fingernail. It's compatible with both iPhone 5, 5s, 6, and 6s; As well as Galaxy S4 and S5 . The NailBot works with the Preemadonna app, which is where you select your images, that you want printed on your phone. Now you do have to use a special white base coat and pre-print coat on your nails prior to printing your design. After you print the design on to your fingernail like most manicures you apply a top coat to protect it. It uses HP Thermal inkjet technology currently, not sure how this will effect pricing or supplies yet as this is still in development. But oh think of the possibilities. Preemadonna smartphone app (photo: Preemadonna) Preemadonna smartphone app (photo: Preemadonna) I think the thing that really gets my attention about this product besides loving a cute nail design is that it takes it's idea a step further and is engaging young girls in technology! Since the Nailbot is opensource Community Partners or members of the Preemadonna Ambassador program can help teach young girls how to code and program the device! The Maker Preemadonna which is an unofficial Nailbot is a DIY printer kit that comes with a handheld, portable printer, and allows for the girls to learn how to program a touch screen interface and create their own designs. As I am a HUGE advocate of young girls getting involved in tech or at least being introduced to it, this makes me very happy. Technology is to improve lives and innovations like this will help girls connect to it in a way that they enjoy. You can still support them on IndieGoGo. The Nailbot is expected to start shipping in late 2016.

  • Pad your wallet while you slim down with the help of the Pact App

You're gearing up for those New Years resolutions right? Probably the most common one is to lose weight, I know I've made that one a few times. Well with the Pact app, there's an incentive to stay on track...it pays you to meet your fitness goals! Pact App Screen (Photo: iTunes) The concept is pretty simple, you set weekly goals or pacts, that can be exercising or healthy eating, set what you pay out if you don't keep it. Sounds fair right? I think all of us could hit the gym a little harder if we knew there was money coming. There are 3 different types of pacts you can make, a gym pact, a food logging pact, or a veggie pact. Gym Pact This one is exactly what it sounds like, you commit to completing your exercises. 30 minutes of working out or 10,000 steps fulfills your pact for that day. Gym Pact Screen (Photo: PactApp.com) Food Logging Pact You log what you eat, it's that simple and if you're already a user of My Fitness Pal you'll be happy to know that the Pact App can connect to it! So this makes tracking and logging your food so much easier. Food Logging Screen (Photo: PactApp.com) Veggie Pact You commit to eating a certain amount of veggies each week. You have to take a picture and upload it to the app to have it verified by the community. Veggie Pact Screen (Photo: PactApp.com) The Pact App also connects to Map My Run, FitBit, Run Keeper and few other apps to help you track and log your fitness goals. Now it's not a ton of money but the idea is to not lose money by keeping your commitment, and then you earn money. You can also schedule breaks so you don't have to worry about being ruled by an app. The Pact App is available on both iOS and Android. Good luck with those resolutions! ~ChicDivaGeek

  • Dance your own beat literally with JukeDeck

Stock Photo: Pexels There are so many people that are making careers or hobbies out of creating digital content such as vlogging, YouTube tutorials, and alot of time they are using other people's music as their soundtrack. Unless you're an artist this is the case, or your video may have no soundtrack at all. But what if there was a way for you to have unique royalty-free music for your video projects and you don't have to have sound engineering experience? Jukedeck is the answer to that! The website uses Artificial Intelligence to create each chord and note of your unique song. It literally only takes a few minutes! You tell it the style/genre of music you want, your choices are between Folk, Rock, Electronic, and Ambient. Take a listen to the one I created here: ChicDivaGeek's Jukedeck song They named it Lyrical Regret (I chose rock and uplifting and this is what I got). For an individual or a small business (you have fewer than 10 employees), you can open a free account which gets you 5 free downloads a month. If you go over it's $6.99/download. Not quite a Fortune 500 company, then the Large Business option for $21.99 which allows for the royalty free license but covers your company as you have more than 10 employees.
