- Outlook, GMail...Amazon WorkMail??
Stock photo "You've got mail" well that's not what we hear when we get email but still. Email is the one of the most prominent ways that we communicate for businesses or contact nowadays. If you have an email address most likely you are using Gmail.com, Outlook.com, Yahoo.com for your personal email or small business. On the large scale business/enterprise side you are most likely using Microsoft. Well, now there will be another option soon, Amazon WorkMail. Amazon has been slowly working it's way into the enterprise side of things with it's AWS (Amazon Web Services) division. Amazon WorkMail is managed through the cloud service of AWS. Now this doesn't mean that you couldn't use Outlook clients to access your email it would be more or less the skeleton on which your company's email service runs. You can also access the email service via your web browser or through other third party email clients. Workmail webview photo credit: Amazon Amazon Workmail can work with a company's existing Active Directory configuration. It also comes with data encryption keys that are managed by you. The service also offers low per user pricing, per person with 50GB of storage it's just $4/month. ~ChicDivaGeek
- App Spotlight: Kim Kardashian's Hollywood Game
Kim Kardashian is known for alot of things, clothes, makeup, her "assets", reality TV, and now she has made her foray into the tech world with her very own app. I mean why not, there's really an app for everything and with as big of a brand that she has, this isn't really surprising. I give you, Kim Kardashian: Hollywood game Most would probably wonder what could she possibly have in the form of a game, but the app is basically about you creating a celebrity and completing tasks (quests for my fellow nerds lol) and progressing through Hollywood to achieve celebrity status. The game does offer in-app purchases for clothing and things for your character in the game. You get to model or design what your character will look like with regards to hair, skin tone, and a few selections of outfits and then you're off into the game. It's actually not too bad in terms of a way to occupy the time. Will you be downloading the Kim Kardashian game? I currently have it on my iPad. It's also available from the Google Play store! ~ChicDivaGeek
- Tech Accessory Nostalgia: Trapper Keeper Cases for your tablet
Photo Credit: Kensington Blog If your anywhere near an 80s kid or attend grade school in the 90s, then you recognize the picture immediately, yes it's a Trapper Keeper, but it's for your tablet! Everyone remembers going back to school shopping and always wanting to get the coolest designed Trapper Keeper (I mean we had to find some reason to get excited about lugging around notebooks and doing homework right?) I was all too infamous for just throwing things in there and snapping the Velcro shut. Kensington has partnered with Mead and Trapper Keeper to make a new line of tablet cases that will take us all back to that time, without taking us all the way back. They will come in sizes for both 10" and 8" tablets. They are priced between $24.99 and $29.99 and will ship in September. Hopefully they come out with some more abstract designs. Check out what they have here: Kensington ~ChicDivaGeek
- Meet Prynt, the Instant Camera Case
Photo credit: Prynt Kickstarter site We live in an age of digital sharing, but remember when we used to actually have to print pictures by getting them developed or instantly with a Polaroid camera? I remember having a Polaroid camera ( jeez the film was expensive) and being able to touch that moment I captured. While we can't go backwards we can move forward and on that note, I give you Prynt the instant camera case for iPhone and Android. This case is concept is simple, you place your phone in it, take a picture and then print! It's simple. The case has it's own internal battery so it won't drain your device battery. You don't have to load ink into it, the ink is in the paper that will be used. The paper is $5/pack which can be ordered through the app, which is currently still in development. The project is currently in it's last week on Kickstarter with over 1 million in funding already. The product is expected to ship to most backers this summer. The case is only $99 and 10 sheets of paper are included in that. The case is compatible with iPhone 5/5s, iPhone 6, and Galaxy S4 and S5. ~ChicDivaGeek
- Apple to add more diverse emoji's in next update of iOS, version 8.3
Photo credit @ReneRitchie twitter Apple recently released the iOS 8.3 beta 2 to developers. This gives the developers a chance to work with and prepare their apps for upcoming release, all though if you have a Apple developer account you can get access to the upcoming software. Just keep in mind what beta means, it's not finished and of course there are bugs. But anyway, for many of my readers the news you have been waiting for, there are going to be new and more diverse emojis in the 8.3 iOS update! They are even updating flags in it as well. Also Apple has decided to start doing a public beta program for iOS the same way they did with OS X. So in March you will be able to test and provide feedback and provide information to Apple engineers on the forthcoming iOS release. The Apple Seed program is by invitation only but you can sign up for the OS X beta program without being invited. ~ChicDivaGeek
- Fun Friday: Play Super Nintendo games on your computer
I am almost sure if you grew up in the 90s you know what that picture above is, or at least what it appears to be. Nowadays we have the Xbox One, Playstation 4, and the Wii U, but when I was younger my favorite system had to be the Super Nintendo. Well you can play it on your PC! Here's how you do it, first thing you are going to need is an emulator (a program that emulates the console) which you can download at EmuParadise . The download is usually a zip file, then run the executable file from the folder. Now I did have to try a few to find one that I liked but I went with the Snes9XW. You can also search the site for ROMS which are the games that you play on the emulators. I am pretty sure that my actual console is still at my mom's somewhere. *Update* You can also do this in your browser! Download Google Chrome, then go to your Google Drive, and click on the "My Drive" that is above where your folders sit. Go to More then select "Connect More Apps" and find Game Emulator. You can use the same ROM's found at EmuParadise via the URL or downloading them and saving them to your drive to play. Happy gaming! ~ChicDiveGeek
- Fox to bring live action X-Men series to tv
Photo credit: FanPop screenshot Comic and super hero fans rejoice! According to the Hollywood Reporter Fox is in the very early stages of trying to bring a live action series version of the X-Men to television. The producers of 24, Evan Katz and Manny Coto are apart of this. We all know how good a series 24 was, so it's a pretty safe bet that if this series comes to fruition it could be handled correctly and be AMAZING! As a kid I watched the animated series and even collected the trading cards (like kept them in plastic and all of that) so this is pretty exciting news. The X-Men stories go so many different directions and a series may be a great way to tell the stories without having to condense them into a 2 hour movie and angering the comic book world. ~ChicDivaGeek
- Apple's WWDC: What You Need to Know
Image: Apple Press Unless you were under a rock yesterday and not online, you've probably heard that Apple held it's annual Worldwide Developer Conference (or WWDC) yesterday. This year didn't have a many big announcements as in previous years but there is still plenty to share... iOS 9 (Photo: Apple Press) First off, before we get started there was no new iPhone announced this year. Don't really think there was a need seeing how they released the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus last year. But iOS 9 was officially announced. Some of the most notable changes coming in the latest release of Apple's mobile OS are: More Intelligent Siri: With the help of Proactive Assistance, Siri will help present you with relevant apps or people to call based on your usage (SkyNet anyone?). Siri will also be able to let you know when you should leave for meetings and appointments, even factoring in traffic, so you're not late. Oh and it can also learn what type of music you listen to at certain times of the day or at certain locations, so you plug up your headphones up at work and it brings up the music. Not to worry though all the information that Siri is using and studying on you is stored locally on your iOS device Transit feature in Maps: Now of course the Apple Maps is nothing new to iOS but it will now be able to give directions to users that take public transportation with Transit. So you can really plan your trip down to the steps. It takes into account buses, trains, and subways. Tranist in iOS9 (Photo: Apple Press) Improved Battery Life: No you don't get a new battery, but with the new Low Power Mode feature your phone's battery life can be extended up to 3 hours. *Drumroll for this next one*........Apple is allowing is Swift programming language (Swift 2 is the latest incarnation) to be open source! Developers rejoice! Seriously if you have been following tech for any number of years, you know Apple is very tight with their technologies. Apple Pay: While Apple Pay is still being adopted the capabilities may make it go a little smoother. At WWDC it was announced that in iOS 9 Apple will be adding support for Store Credit cards, debit cards, and those reward cards that we all have on our key chains. Finally I can do something about this janitor key look my key ring has. Also, small business owners, Apple hasn't forgotten about you, Apple Pay is coming to Square in the fall. Apple Pay in iOS9 (Photo: Apple Press) And one more thing, for the first time ever, Apple will be releasing iOS 9 as a public beta in July with the final version to be released to everyone in September (Fall as is the norm). If you want to sign up for the public beta go here. OS X: El Capitan No that's not a joke, the next release of Apple's Mac OS X is really called El Capitan. I really want to see the think tank process for these names one day. The new OS isn't a major overhaul but has some nice new features, such as the split screen view so that you can work in two windows at once (sounds familiar right?) Another desktop window management feature is improved Spaces functionality. You can drag a window or two to the top of your screen and it essentially becomes it's on desktop. I think this feature is great as most of us are working on more than one task at a time, and if you're on a laptop it gets crowded quick. An improved Notes app allows you to add PDFs, pictures, video and other content easily into a note. Spotlight (that's search for non-Mac users) now allows for you to search more intuitively. You can type a phrase to search for items. For my gamers, Metal will be in El Capitan...(I know you're like well metal is in computers right?)...Metal is Apple's graphics technology which improves graphics performance as well as system efficiency. Basically it's going to make it easier for you to be a gamer on your Mac. Mac OS X El Capitan, Split screen feature (Photo: Apple Press) Last but certainly not least....Apple Music! Now we all knew this announcement was coming when Apple purchased Beats Music back in 2014 . Apple officially announced it's new streaming service Apple Music. The service combines your library, and adds of course music streaming, profiles for artists to connect and share with fans, and Beats 1. Beats 1 is a live radio station broadcasting in over 100 countries 24 hours a day. Drake made an appearance at the WWDC during the Apple Music announcement and like it has been rumored, he will be partnering with Apple Music. Drake is going to release his next album using Apple Music's Connect feature. The new music service will be offered free for the first three months (sign up with your Apple ID) it goes live on June 30th. After the free trial, it is $9.99/month for an individual and $14.99/month for a family of six (this sounds like the better move to me). As always stayed tuned for more updates! ~ChicDivaGeek
- Fun Friday: Lego Worlds...Minecraft's destroyer?
If you're a fan of Minecraft, the game that essentially let's you design your own world or go about "mining" items to craft things to survive, and you're a fan of LEGOs then this is definitely for you. TT Games announced they are releasing LEGO Worlds. The game is pretty much you designing your own world of play with what else, LEGOs. Now the game isn't officially released yet, but the good news is that Steam is offering early access, you can sign up and play it ahead of time and of course this helps them develop the best finished product possible. The cost to purchase LEGO Worlds via Early Access is $14.99, otherwise the full finished game will be available in 2016. ~ChicDivaGeek
- Windows 10 Gets Release Date
Windows 10 finally has a release date, July 29. Is your computer ready, the better question is are you? Some users, like myself have taken advantage of the technical preview. Which I must say has me looking forward to the latest incarnation of Windows. So now is a good time for me to back up my important stuff and start preparing for the OS upgrade, and you should too. Another tip, look into software that you currently have running to see if it will be supported by Windows 10 or if the software vendor is going to release updates or new versions to ensure that you have no problems post upgrade. Remember if you are running officially licensed Windows 7 or 8.1 the upgrade to Windows 10 is free for the first year. It will be available for retail sales as well with Windows 10 Home costing $119, $199 for Windows 10 Professional, and $99 for a Windows 10 Pro Pack to upgrade from a licensed copy of Windows 10 Home to the Professional version. Will you be upgrading over the summer? Are you still running Windows 7, or dare I ask Windows XP? Windows 10 looks to be a good blend of features and familiarity. So it gets the green light from me. ~ChicDivaGeek
- For the little engineers/techies in your life...Kano!
credit: Kano This little finding made me inner geek happy. I've always wanted a way to help technology appeal to little minds and Kano has gone and done it. Kano is a computer and coding kit with the simplicity of Legos. Kano is a computer that you build yourself and you also code it as well (talking to my Linux people here) The OS is open source, so you can really play around with it. But it comes with the components you see above, instruction manuals (not the monitor that you see). It runs on Rasberry Pi, Model B, which touts an ARM 700MHz CPU and 512MB of RAM, it also comes with a 8GB SD card that has the OS, WiFi dongle, and cables to connect it to a screen. So you won't be playing the latest version of the Sims on it. But I think this is a great way to introduce kids to the world of tech outside of tablets and smartphones. It retails for $149 credit: Kano All they've got to do is put it together! This may make it under my Christmas tree this year for my little guy! Check them out! http://www.kano.me/ ~ChicDivaGeek
